Prussian P8 4-6-0 No. 038 711-8 climbs the 1 in 48 gradient from Laufen (in the background) up to Lautlingen with a train from Tübingen to Sigmaringen along the scenic line through the Schwäbische Alb. It was not a hardship to be up early to see (and hear!) things like this from the bedroom window of the Fremdenzimmer in which I was staying in the village of Laufen. The morning sun is still low in the sky as Class 50 2-10-0 No. 050 383-9 slogs up the 1 in 48 gradient from Laufen station with a freight train for Sigmaringen from Tübingen on another gorgeous morning, Friday 8th May 1970. Despite the spectacle, various locals go about their business oblivious to the audio visual display!
