Ffestiniog Railway. 1966/05/30, 1. The first Garratt locomotive built by Beyer, Peacock was No. K1, an 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 for the Tasmanian Government Railways North East Dundas Tramway. K1 and K2 were built in 1909 and unusually for Garratt locos were compounds with the cylinders on the inner end of the engines. This was at the insistence of the buyers, but was not replicated on any other Garratts. The line closed in 1929 and K1 was repatriated by Beyer, Peacock for their museum in 1947, later being sold on to the Ffestiniog Railway when Beyer, Peacock closed down. Here, the loco is on display at Porthmadog Harbour soon after arrival, it was later loaned to the National Railway Museum. It is now on the Welsh Highland Railway and has been restored to working order. Monday 30th May 1966.
