1965/08/05, 3. 0-6-0ST OC Area No. 23 (Bowes Railway No. 12, Hawthorn Leslie 2719/1907) approaches the flat crossing of the Bowes Railway with the Tanfield branch of BR as it heads towards Marley Hill Colliery with a loaded train of coal, perhaps from Blackburn Fell Drift, Thursday 5th August 1965. From the point just behind the engine, this cutting is now filled in to the bridge in the background to form a car park for the present day Tanfield Railway. The flat crossing still exists, but only as a headshunt from Marley Hill engine shed.
