A nice coincidence at Backworth station on the North Tyneside Loop line, as a DMU (in original green livery) on duty B5 gets ready to depart for Newcastle from the Whitley Bay direction as 0-6-0ST NCB No. 60 crosses over the bridge running light engine from West Allotment to Backworth Colliery. The North Tyneside Loop was electrified in LNER days but changed to diesel traction when the equipment became life-expired. It has since been re-electrified as part of the Tyneside Metro system. Peckett 0-4-0ST No. 1950/1938 "Bradley" stands in front of a rake of 16T wagons before propelling them up the incline to the exchange sidings with BR whilst shunting at the Northfleet Deep Water Wharf & Storage Company in north Kent. Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide6141_NCBHunslet_Wheldale.jpg 1971/01/19, 7. A very nicely kept maroon-liveried Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST (HE 2879/1943 - at some stage named "Diana" though it was carrying no name at this point) takes water from the “Torpedo” type water tower close by the level-crossing at Wheldale Colliery, Castleford, on Tuesday 19th January 1971. Wheldale Colliery lasted longer than some in the area, but it too is now long since closed. GMP_Slide497_Peckett1689_TunnelCement.jpg 1964/01/xx, 5. Peckett 0-4-0ST "Thor" (Class M5? No. 1689/1925) is about to traverse the level-crossing over the road into the Tunnel Cement works at Purfleet, Essex, having brought a train of Presflo Cement wagons from the interchange sidings with BR. GMP_Slide499_FordNo.6_Dagenham.jpg 1964/01/xx, 7. Ford Motor Works at Dagenham had an extensive internal railway system with a fair size fleet of engines. Here, Ford No. 6 (Peckett No. 1908/1937) an 0-4-0ST looks in good condition but is out of use at the end of a siding. Photo taken from outside the perimeter fence, perhaps due to the proximity of the security gatehouse! January 1964. GMP_Slide237_Peckett1734_AlphaCement.jpg 1963/08/07, 3. A Peckett 0-4-0ST "Thurwhit" (Class R2 No. 1734/1927) has returned from the exchange sidings with BR into the yard at Alpha Cement works near Purfleet in Essex, Wednesday 7th August 1963. The three cement silos can still be seen to this day, just to the west of the M25 on the north side of the Dartford crossing of the River Thames. Nearest camera is Peckett 0-6-0ST "Coronation" (Class B3 No. 1920/1936), behind is an unidentified Peckett 0-4-0ST, whilst behind that is an unidentified Hunslet diesel, though it presumably did not take any coal on board! The background is dominated by parts of the cement mill itself. Jaunuary 1964. GMP_Slide493_Peckett1318_TunnelCement.jpg 1964/01/xx, 2. A Peckett 0-4-0ST "Anglo-Dane" (Class R2 No. 1318/1913) is ready for work in the somewhat grimy environment alongside the coal stage at Tunnel Cement Works near Purfleet in Essex. January 1964. GMP_Slide3708_MechNavvies71515_Swalwell.jpg 1969/03/xx, 09. On the opposite side of the River Derwent to Derwenthaugh was Swalwell Disposal Point. Here, "Mech. Navvies Ltd" Austerity 0-6-0ST IC No. 71515 simmers in the snow between duties. It is painted in an attractive Indian Red livery and is nicely clean. March 1969. The number is the loco's WD identity, it was built by RSH, No. 7169 of 1945. It was sold to the East Somerset Railway for preservation as BR No. 68005 (a fictitious identity!) before moving to the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway. It is now privately owned and undergoing restoration to NCB condition before being used at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. GMP_Slide3872_NCB54_Backworth.jpg 1969/06/xx, 05. Austerity 0-6-0ST (IC) NCB No. 54 shunts a rake of ancient NCB wagons (ex-NER) in the yard at Eccles Colliery, Backworth, alongside the line from Fenwick Colliery on the left. June 1969. GMP_Slide2816_SandNo7_LeightonBuzzard.jpg 1967/07/01. The Leighton Buzzard Light Railway was built in 1919 to carry sand extracted from various local quarries to the standard gauge line from Leighton Buzzard to Dunstable. It was 2' 0" gauge (610mm) and apart from the first couple of years was operated by internal combustion locos, mainly a variety of Simplex machines. Here Simplex No. 7 is at the head of a train of Hudson tipper wagons, while No. 4 is giving a shove at the rear to get the train out of Billington Road Quarry (aka Pratt's Pit Quarry?), then across Billington Road on the level to the transhipment area. Today, this area, which is almost adjacent to the existing terminus of the preserved line at Page's Park, is now covered by a new housing estate. Saturday 1st July 1967. GMP_Slide405_Superb_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 15. On the 2'6" gauge Bowaters Paper Mills system near Sittingbourne in Kent, 0-6-2T (OC) "Superb" simmers at Ridham Dock, alongside the standard gauge line which connected with BR. Dockside cranes can be seen in the background. This engine was Bagnall No. 2624/1940 and like all the steam engines on the system was fitted with a spark-arrestor chimney. Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide407_EEBattery_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 16. Forerunner to the "Deltics"! English Electric 0-4-0 (4wBE, or is it a Bo or even a B?) Battery Electric loco, Works No. 515/1921, sits outside the shed on the 2'6" gauge Bowaters Paper Mills railway at Ridham Dock, north Kent on Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide410_Monarch_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 19. Another rare beast at Bowaters Railway at Sittingbourne was "Monarch", a Bagnall version of the Meyer type articulated 0-4-4-0T, No. 3024/1953. Due to lack of space between the frames above the rear power bogie it had a marine type boiler rather than the conventional deep firebox. It later moved to the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway for preservation. It is seen here at the Sittingbourne end of the line coupled to a train of bogie wagons. Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide408_Unique_Fireless_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 17. This was a pretty rare beast! Bagnall 2-4-0F Fireless No. 2216/1924 "Unique" shunts some wagons at Kemsley Mill on the Bowaters Paper Mills 2'6" gauge system in north Kent on the incredibly dull afternoon of Saturday 21st September 1963. The engine still survives but is not operational on the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway. GMP_Slide387_KoppelFireless_EmpireMills.jpg 1963/09/21, 02. Arthur Koppel 0-4-0F fireless loco, Works No. 2499/1907 sits on the jetty on the River Thames at Empire Paper Mills in north Kent, during a visit on Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide395_KoppelFireless_ImperialMills.jpg 1963/09/21, 10. Sitting in the yard at Imperial Paper Mills near Dartford is Arthur Koppel fireless 0-4-0F, Works No. 4708 of 1911, named "Marion". It is in working order between duties during an official visit on Saturday 21st September 1963. Several members of the visiting party examine the loco. GMP_Slide396_BarclayFireless_ImperialMills.jpg 1963/09/21, 11. Barclay 0-4-0F Fireless loco Works No. 1496 of 1917, carrying a "No. 3" plate on its reservoir casing, is complete with match truck as it stands in rather overgrown sidings at the Imperial Paper Mills in north Kent, Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide398_Excelsior_Leader_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 13. On the Bowater's Paper Mills system at Sittingbourne in Kent, two Kerr Stuart 0-4-2STs are ready for work outside the loco depot on the 2' 6" gauge line. On the left is "Excelsior", Works No. 1049 of 1908, while on the right is "Leader", Works No. 926 of 1906. Note the spark-arresting chimneys! Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide397_Melior_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 12. Kerr Stuart 0-4-2ST, Works No. 4219 of 1924, "Melior" on the 2' 6" gauge system at Bowater's Paper Mills, Sittingbourne, Kent. The loco is in steam outside the engine shed during an official visit on Saturday 21st September 1963, a very dull day weatherwise! Part of the system was later preserved as the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, sadly, at the moment the future of the line is in some doubt. GMP_Slide389_Peckett1880_EmpireMills.jpg 1963/09/21, 04. At the Empire Paper Mills in north Kent, Peckett 0-4-0ST No. 1880/1935 "Nelson" is bringing in a train from the exchange sidings with BR (judging from the length of the coupling chain and the distance between the buffers of the engine and the wagon, this was definitely "loose-coupled!). The Barclay Fireless is still re-charging at the steam delivery pipe in the background, while a train of paper is being loaded (or unloaded?) under the overhead crane gantry. Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide386_BarclayFireless_EmpireMills.jpg 1963/09/21, 01. Barclay Fireless 0-4-0F No. 1561/1916 has been shunting and is now on its way to the steam re-charging equipment in order to replenish its steam reservoir whilst working at the Empire Paper Mills in north Kent. Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide409_Superior_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 18. Kerr Stuart 0-6-2T, Works No. 4034 of 1920, "Superior", shunts some wagons alongside the power station at Kemsley Mill on the Bowater's Paper Mills system, Saturday 21st September 1963. GMP_Slide401_Chevallier_Bowaters.jpg 1963/09/21, 14. Manning Wardle 0-6-2T, Works No. 1877 of 1915, "Chevallier" simmers amidst the mountains of paper near Ridham Dock, on the Bowater's system. The loco was originally based on the Chattenden & Upnor naval railway and was sold to Bowater's in 1950. It subsequently moved to the Great Whipsnade Railway and is now owned by Bill Parker. Saturday 21st September 1963.
