Fairbourne Railway. 1966/08/xx. Fairbourne Railway 2-6-2T No. 20 "Tracy-Jo" was in fact a steam outline diesel, built by Guest Engineering in 1964 for the Dudley Zoo Railway and used on the Fairbourne line between 1964 and 1966. It was named after the daughter of the builder and is here departing from Fairbourne station on its way to the Barmouth Ferry station. It was later rebuilt as a "real" steam engine and became a 2-6-4T which now runs as "Wroxham Broad" on the Bure Valley Railway in Norfolk. Ffestiniog Railway. 1963/04/20, 03. One of the George England 0-4-0STT engines is dumped in Glan-y-Mor yard on the seaward side of Boston Lodge works and shed across "The Cob" from Porthmadog. It has the name "Mountaineer" scrawled in chalk, but was this its actual identity? Photo taken in utterly foul conditions during a visit by the participants in the "FR Society Special" from Paddington to Porthmadog, Saturday 20th April 1963. I have now been informed by several people that this is in fact "Welsh Pony" as "Mountaineer" was never rebuilt as a saddletank and was scrapped in 1879! 1024x675 GMP_Slide25_WelshPony_BostonLodge.jpg |
Ffestiniog Railway. 1963/04/20, 04. FR George England 0-4-0STT No. 1 "Princess" has had at least a bit of cosmetic attention as it is stored in Glan-y-Mor yard at Boston Lodge Works, also during the visit of the participants of the "FR Society Special" from London Paddington to Porthmadog on a very miserable Saturday 20th April 1963. 1024x678 GMP_Slide26_Princess_BostonLodge.jpg |

Ffestiniog Railway. 1963/08/26, 1. Ex-Penrhyn Railway Hunslet 1893 built 0-4-0ST "Linda", now running with an improvised tender, soon after arriving at the Ffestiniog Railway. She was later rebuilt as a 2-4-0STT with a proper tender and repainted in FR livery. She is in charge of the first train of the day from Porthmadog Harbour to Tan-y-Bwlch and is here just passing the level-crossing at Penrhyndeudraeth. The first few coaches were known as the "Bug-Boxes", some of the original 4-wheeled rolling stock of the railway. Behind them is coach No. 22, known as the "banana van" due to its sagging frames! The track is some of the old "double-head" chaired rails, most of which has now been replaced by new flatbottom rail. Monday 26th August 1963. 1024x671 GMP_Slide267_FR_Linda_Penrhyn.jpg |

The driver is Bill Hoole, formerly of King's Cross "Top Shed" until retirement. The train is on the main running line, the crossover in the foreground is out of the loop at Minffordd and the right hand track is the long siding to the exchange yard with BR. 1024x677 GMP_Slide269_MerddinEmrys_Minffordd.jpg |

She is still carrying faded Penrhyn Railway black livery with LNWR style lining and has been fitted with a temporary tender from one of the England 0-4-0STT engines. Later, the engine was rebuilt with a proper tender and given FR green livery, later still she was rebuilt as a 2-4-0STT. Behind in the platform road is a train being shunted by "Prince", the leading vehicles are some of the "Bug-Boxes" and the "Banana Van" coach No. 22 is behind them. Double-Fairlie No. 10 "Merddin Emrys" is awaiting the arrival of another train from Porthmadog before departing downhill to the sea again. This was the terminus of the line for several years, until the line was rebuilt to Dduallt as the next stage. Monday 26th August 1963. The leading coach of the train is the first class Observation Car No. 11, while behind that is the ex-Lynton & Barnstaple Railway carriage rebuilt as the "Snapper Bar". 1024x679 GMP_Slide285_MerddinEmrys_Tan-y-Bwlch.jpg |
Ffestiniog Railway. 1963/08/26, 8. The Ffestiniog Railway had been running from Porthmadog Harbour to Tan-y-Bwlch for some years by this time, but the section from there to Dduallt was still virtually untouched, almost as "abandoned". In typical Welsh summer weather we walked to Dduallt and Moelwyn Tunnel along the track. This is the scene at Campbell's Curve by the old water tower, a couple of old slate wagons are chocked on the original track. On the left my brothers Barry and Keith examine some relic or other, while in the centre my father Derek keeps an eye on things. Monday 26th August 1963. 1024x679 GMP_Slide288_FRCampbellsCurve.jpg |

Ffestiniog Railway. 1964/08/11. Seen from the cliffs overlooking the Glaslyn estuary, Boston Lodge Works, running shed and Glan-y-Mor yard bask in the summer sunshine. The track running out of the picture bottom left led to the gunpowder store sheds and the coach on the left is derelict No. 10. The three-way stub point that had been part of the layout at Porthmadog Harbour station had been replaced and was now in the process of being relaid in Glan-y-Mor yard (this was part of my first volunteering work as a 15 year old - it took most of the two weeks I was there to relay the pointwork!). In the centre is the cab from "Earl of Merioneth", to the right under the tarpaulin is (I think) "Welsh Pony" while to the right of that is the engine that came from Harrogate Gas Works. In the works yard the tanks from "Earl of Merioneth" can be seen, ex-Penrhyn Railway 0-4-0ST "Blanche" is on the loco preparation and disposal track, together with "Prince". The London Area Group (whose members were known as "LAGs") of the Ffestiniog Railway Society ran regular working parties to help out with the Permanent Way department at the railway. These were usually on winter weekends when the railway wasn't running and were great fun as well as instructional! Here, the loop at Penrhyndeudraeth station was being extended with new pointwork at each end together with associated re-ballasting. Fred Howe's PW Dept. Ffestiniog Railway. 1966/02/12, 2. One of the delights of the working parties was the possibility of a "Gravity Train" ride after the day's work was over, on the return to Minffordd Yard. This was the original method of working the line, it being downhill all the way from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the sea at Porthmadog Harbour, loaded trains of slate ran by gravity with brakesmen on board, the empties were hauled back by horses until the advent of steam locomotion. In this view, head of the PW Dept, Ron Lester, is in the first of the ex-RAF wagons as they depart over newly relaid track from Penrhyndeudraeth station, Graham "The Pipe" Westley is in the second wagon and other "LAG" members in subsequent wagons. Ffestiniog Railway. 1966/05/30, 1. The first Garratt locomotive built by Beyer, Peacock was No. K1, an 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 for the Tasmanian Government Railways North East Dundas Tramway. K1 and K2 were built in 1909 and unusually for Garratt locos were compounds with the cylinders on the inner end of the engines. This was at the insistence of the buyers, but was not replicated on any other Garratts. The line closed in 1929 and K1 was repatriated by Beyer, Peacock for their museum in 1947, later being sold on to the Ffestiniog Railway when Beyer, Peacock closed down. Here, the loco is on display at Porthmadog Harbour soon after arrival, it was later loaned to the National Railway Museum. It is now on the Welsh Highland Railway and has been restored to working order. Monday 30th May 1966. 1024x649 GMP_Slide2115_GarrattK1_Porthmadog.jpg |

Ffestiniog Railway. 1966/06/01. 0-4-0STT "Blanche" (ex-Penrhyn Railway) has just come across the level-crossing at Penrhyndeudraeth and is now passing over the stone embankment en route to Tan-y-Bwlch with the first train of the day on Wednesday 1st June 1966. The house on the right was known as Plas Meini and was owned by the father of one of the regular London Area Group volunteers, as was the house just below it, Pantyfynnon, where we oftened stayed during working parties. As the house was semi-derelict at the time, it was hardly luxury accommodation! 1024x659 GMP_Slide2123_Blanche_Penrhyn.jpg |
Snowdon Mountain Railway. 1963/08/25. No. 4 "Snowdon" was one of the first batch built by SLM in Winterthur in 1896, but was taken out of use in 1936.
