S&L 0-6-0ST No. 21 (Hawthorn Leslie No. 3931/1936) shunts some full blast furnace slag ladles in the yard. Friday 10th August 1962. This engine still exists, at the Ribble Steam Railway, Preston. 1024x618 GMP_BWNeg122_SLNo.21_Corby.jpg |
1962/08/10, 2. Seen from the West Gate bridge on Rockingham Road, Stewarts & Lloyds steelworks at Corby, alongside the former Midland main line. S&L 0-6-0ST No. 7 (Andrew Barclay No. 1268/1912) shunts some steel cauldron wagons, while in the background LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48285 is in the yard. Friday 10th August 1962. Originally sold to Easton Gibb & Son in 1912 and used in the construction of Rosyth Dockyard, S&L No. 7 was scrapped at Corby Works in 1968 1024x613 GMP_BWNeg125_SLNo.7_Corby.jpg |
1962/08/12. Staveley Iron Works near Chesterfield had its own internal rail system, but hired in motive power from the Midland Railway. It apparently had a 100 year contract, which rather outlasted the provision of Midland power, but did ensure some ancient engines survived! Here, Johnson "Half-Cab" class 1F 0-6-0T is shunting internal user wagons within the works on Sunday 12th August 1962. 1024x651 GMP_BWNeg130_41763_Staveley.jpg |

1963/07/21, 2. Port of Bristol Authority 0-6-0ST No. S11 "Bristol" (Peckett Class FA No. 2036/1943) has just left the Avonmouth Docks complex with the stock of the RCTS "The Gloucestershire Railtour" after a tour of the docks lines. This engine came off the train here and was replaced by BR Standard 3MT No. 82036 for the next part of the tour. Sunday 21st July 1963. 1024x677 GMP_Slide156_PeckettS11_Avonmouth.jpg |
1963/08/07, 1. Not all industrial railway systems were in the "traditional" industrial areas - here a Barclay 0-4-0ST (OC) works No. 2353 is pottering around in the exchange sidings with BR at West Thurrock power station in Essex. Quite what the engine is burning to produce the brown smoke I'm not sure! Alongside are the electrified tracks of the former London, Tilbury & Southend Railway from Barking via Tilbury to Southend. Wednesday 7th August 1963. 1024x675 GMP_Slide235_Barclay_WestThurrock.jpg |
1963/08/07, 2. A Peckett 0-4-0ST "Thurwhit" (Class R2 No. 1734/1927) returns from the exchange sidings with BR into the yard at Alpha Cement works near Purfleet in Essex, Wednesday 7th August 1963. 1024x675 GMP_Slide236_Peckett1734_AlphaCement.jpg |
1963/08/07, 3. A Peckett 0-4-0ST "Thurwhit" (Class R2 No. 1734/1927) has returned from the exchange sidings with BR into the yard at Alpha Cement works near Purfleet in Essex, Wednesday 7th August 1963. The three cement silos can still be seen to this day, just to the west of the M25 on the north side of the Dartford crossing of the River Thames. 1024x672 GMP_Slide237_Peckett1734_AlphaCement.jpg |

1963/09/21, 04. At the Empire Paper Mills in north Kent, Peckett 0-4-0ST No. 1880/1935 "Nelson" is bringing in a train from the exchange sidings with BR (judging from the length of the coupling chain and the distance between the buffers of the engine and the wagon, this was definitely "loose-coupled!). The Barclay Fireless is still re-charging at the steam delivery pipe in the background, while a train of paper is being loaded (or unloaded?) under the overhead crane gantry. Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x671 GMP_Slide389_Peckett1880_EmpireMills.jpg |
1963/09/21, 05. At the Empire Paper Mills in north Kent, Peckett 0-4-0ST No. 1880/1935 is bringing in a train from the exchange sidings with BR (judging from the length of the coupling chain and the distance between the buffers of the engine and the wagon, this was definitely "loose-coupled"!). 1963/09/21, 09. Barclay Fireless 0-4-0F No. 2373/1956 "Imperial No. 1" is leaking some of its precious steam reserves as it sits between duties at the Imperial Paper Mills near Northfleet in north Kent. Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x675 GMP_Slide394_BarclayFireless_ImperialMills.jpg |
1963/09/21, 10. Sitting in the yard at Imperial Paper Mills near Dartford is Arthur Koppel fireless 0-4-0F, Works No. 4708 of 1911, named "Marion". It is in working order between duties during an official visit on Saturday 21st September 1963. Several members of the visiting party examine the loco. 1024x660 GMP_Slide395_KoppelFireless_ImperialMills.jpg |
1963/09/21, 11. Barclay 0-4-0F Fireless loco Works No. 1496 of 1917, carrying a "No. 3" plate on its reservoir casing, is complete with match truck as it stands in rather overgrown sidings at the Imperial Paper Mills in north Kent, Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x672 GMP_Slide396_BarclayFireless_ImperialMills.jpg |
1963/09/21, 12. Kerr Stuart 0-4-2ST, Works No. 4219 of 1924, "Melior" on the 2' 6" gauge system at Bowater's Paper Mills, Sittingbourne, Kent. The loco is in steam outside the engine shed during an official visit on Saturday 21st September 1963, a very dull day weatherwise! Part of the system was later preserved as the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, sadly, at the moment the future of the line is in some doubt. 1024x666 GMP_Slide397_Melior_Bowaters.jpg |
1963/09/21, 13. On the Bowater's Paper Mills system at Sittingbourne in Kent, two Kerr Stuart 0-4-2STs are ready for work outside the loco depot on the 2' 6" gauge line. On the left is "Excelsior", Works No. 1049 of 1908, while on the right is "Leader", Works No. 926 of 1906. Note the spark-arresting chimneys! Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x671 GMP_Slide398_Excelsior_Leader_Bowaters.jpg |
1963/09/21, 14. Manning Wardle 0-6-2T, Works No. 1877 of 1915, "Chevallier" simmers amidst the mountains of paper near Ridham Dock, on the Bowater's system. The loco was originally based on the Chattenden & Upnor naval railway and was sold to Bowater's in 1950. It subsequently moved to the Great Whipsnade Railway and is now owned by Bill Parker. Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x679 GMP_Slide401_Chevallier_Bowaters.jpg |
1963/09/21, 15. On the 2'6" gauge Bowaters Paper Mills system near Sittingbourne in Kent, 0-6-2T (OC) "Superb" simmers at Ridham Dock, alongside the standard gauge line which connected with BR. Dockside cranes can be seen in the background. This engine was Bagnall No. 2624/1940 and like all the steam engines on the system was fitted with a spark-arrestor chimney. Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x672 GMP_Slide405_Superb_Bowaters.jpg |
1963/09/21, 16. Forerunner to the "Deltics"! English Electric 0-4-0 (4wBE, or is it a Bo or even a B?) Battery Electric loco, Works No. 515/1921, sits outside the shed on the 2'6" gauge Bowaters Paper Mills railway at Ridham Dock, north Kent on Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x676 GMP_Slide407_EEBattery_Bowaters.jpg |
1963/09/21, 17. This was a pretty rare beast! Bagnall 2-4-0F Fireless No. 2216/1924 "Unique" shunts some wagons at Kemsley Mill on the Bowaters Paper Mills 2'6" gauge system in north Kent on the incredibly dull afternoon of Saturday 21st September 1963. The engine still survives but is not operational on the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway. 1024x681 GMP_Slide408_Unique_Fireless_Bowaters.jpg |
1963/09/21, 18. Kerr Stuart 0-6-2T, Works No. 4034 of 1920, "Superior", shunts some wagons alongside the power station at Kemsley Mill on the Bowater's Paper Mills system, Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x601 GMP_Slide409_Superior_Bowaters.jpg |
1963/09/21, 19. Another rare beast at Bowaters Railway at Sittingbourne was "Monarch", a Bagnall version of the Meyer type articulated 0-4-4-0T, No. 3024/1953. Due to lack of space between the frames above the rear power bogie it had a marine type boiler rather than the conventional deep firebox. It later moved to the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway for preservation. It is seen here at the Sittingbourne end of the line coupled to a train of bogie wagons. Saturday 21st September 1963. 1024x661 GMP_Slide410_Monarch_Bowaters.jpg |
1964/01/xx, 1. Two Peckett 0-4-0ST's brew up at the locomotive depot within the Tunnel Cement works near Purfleet in Essex, prior to the afternoon shift. In the foreground is "Fola" (Class SX12, No. 1287/1912), whilst behind is "Thor" (Class M5? No. 1689/1925). January 1964. 1024x673 GMP_Slide490_Pecketts_TunnelCement.jpg |
1964/01/xx, 2. A Peckett 0-4-0ST "Anglo-Dane" (Class R2 No. 1318/1913) is ready for work in the somewhat grimy environment alongside the coal stage at Tunnel Cement Works near Purfleet in Essex. January 1964. 1024x679 GMP_Slide493_Peckett1318_TunnelCement.jpg |
1964/01/xx, 3. A busy time at the Tunnel Cement works near Purfleet in Essex as various locos refuel at the coal stage in the works. Nearest camera is Peckett 0-6-0ST "Coronation" (Class B3 No. 1920/1936), behind is an unidentified Peckett 0-4-0ST, whilst behind that is an unidentified Hunslet diesel, though it presumably did not take any coal on board! The background is dominated by parts of the cement mill itself. Jaunuary 1964. 1024x674 GMP_Slide494_Peckett1920_TunnelCement.jpg |
1964/01/xx, 4. Peckett 0-4-0ST "Fola" (Class SX12, No. 1287/1912) is ready for work by the loco depot at Tunnel Cement works near Purfleet in Essex. January 1964. 1024x672 GMP_Slide495_Peckett1287_TunnelCement.jpg |
1964/01/xx, 5. Peckett 0-4-0ST "Thor" (Class M5? No. 1689/1925) is about to traverse the level-crossing over the road into the Tunnel Cement works at Purfleet, Essex, having brought a train of Presflo Cement wagons from the interchange sidings with BR. January 1964. 1024x652 GMP_Slide497_Peckett1689_TunnelCement.jpg |
1964/01/xx, 6. On a cold but sunny winter's day, Barclay 0-4-0ST "Charles" (Identity?) sits between duties in the yard at Alpha Cement Works near Purfleet. The three cement silos in the background can still be seen to this day, just to the west of the M25 on the north side of the Dartford crossing of the River Thames. January 1964. 1024x671 GMP_Slide498_BarclayCharles_AlphaCement.jpg |
1964/01/xx, 7. Ford Motor Works at Dagenham had an extensive internal railway system with a fair size fleet of engines. Here, Ford No. 6 (Peckett No. 1908/1937) an 0-4-0ST looks in good condition but is out of use at the end of a siding. Photo taken from outside the perimeter fence, perhaps due to the proximity of the security gatehouse! January 1964. 1024x672 GMP_Slide499_FordNo.6_Dagenham.jpg |
1965/08/02, 1. Seaham Harbour Dock Co. Ltd. "Juno", 0-6-0ST OC (Hawthorn Leslie 3527/1922) on shed at Seaham Harbour. Behind is ex-Dorman Long's No. 173 and various pieces of other engines are scattered about the yard! Monday 2nd August 1965. 1024x673 GMP_Slide1518_Juno_Seaham.jpg |
1965/08/02, 2. Seaham Harbour Dock Co. Ltd No. 18, 0-4-0ST built by Lewin of Poole in 1863, Works No. 693, as an 0-4-0WT for the Londonderry Railway and later rebuilt. Here, it has been working at the lower level below the staithes at Seaham Harbour, and after standing for a while to build up boiler pressure it mounts an all out assault on Dogger Bank, the gradient back to the upper level! Monday 2nd August 1965. 1024x677 GMP_Slide1522_Lewin18_Seaham.jpg |
1965/08/02, 3. 1965/08/02, 4. Having made the trip up from the dock bottom to the higher level, Seaham Harbour No. 18 joins other engines at the shed. The engine was built by Lewin of Poole in 1863 as a 0-4-0WT for the Londonderry Railway, later being rebuilt as a 0-4-0ST OC. Due to its diminutive size (illustrated by the relative size of the fireman) it was able to work under the staithes at the lower level of the harbour. Monday 2nd August 1965. 1024x678 GMP_Slide1524_Lewin18_Seaham.jpg |
1965/08/02, 5. Seaham Harbour Paddle Steam Tug "Reliant" looks in very good condition moored in the harbour, but is sadly out of use. This vessel was later sectioned and preserved in the Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Moored astern of her is sister paddle tug "Eppleton Hall". Monday 2nd August 1965. 1024x587 GMP_Slide1525_Reliant_Seaham.jpg |
1965/08/03, 1. At the Pallion Shipyard of William Doxford & Sons Ltd. in Sunderland, one of the 0-4-0CT OC Crane Tanks, "Roker" (Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 7006/1940) is in action unloading steel girders from a BR Bogie Bolster wagon. Tuesday 3rd August 1965. These engines were unusual as they had outside Joy's valve gear. 1024x655 GMP_Slide1528_Roker_Doxford.jpg |
1965/08/03, 2. William Doxford & Sons Ltd. 0-4-0CT (OC) "Roker" (Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 7006/1940) propels fellow crane tank "Millfield" (RSH 7070/1942) back into the decrepit shed at Pallion Shipyard, Sunderland, with a match truck between them, otherwise the cranes would foul each other! The shed also contained "Hendon" (RSH 7007/1940) and "Southwick" (RSH 7069/1942). Tuesday 3rd August 1965. 1024x666 GMP_Slide1533_Roker_Millfield_Doxford.jpg |
1965/08/03, 3. Barclay 0-6-0T "Will" No. 999/1904 shunts in the yard at Wearmouth Colliery in Sunderland on Tuesday 3rd August 1965. This was one of the last pits in the area, not closing until 1994. 1024x660 GMP_Slide1541_Will_Wearmouth.jpg |
1965/08/05, 1. Springwell Bank Foot shed yard on the Bowes Railway was host to several engines on Thursday 5th August 1965, though none was in steam, this being a holiday period! This was NCB No. 6 Area "B" Group as painted on the engine's tankside and this engine was Area No. 26. It is still carrying its Bowes No. 15, however, and is in Springwell's livery of black with red lining. It is 0-6-0T IC (Hunslet 1506/1930). The engine in front of it is carrying both its numbers, Bowes No.14 and Area No. 25. 1024x677 GMP_Slide1566_Hunslet1506_Bowes.jpg |
1965/08/05, 2. Under a glorious summer sky, nicely clean 0-6-0ST IC Area No. 83 (Bowes Railway No. 20, Hunslet 3688/1948) takes water from the rudimentary facilities just outside Marley Hill engine shed (out of the picture to the left), while in the background gleaming in the sunshine is 0-6-0ST OC Area No. 23 (Bowes Railway No. 12, Hawthorn Leslie 2719/1907) shunting wagons in front of Marley Hill Colliery, Thursday 5th August 1965. This area is now the headquarters of the Tanfield Railway, based at Marley Hill engine shed. 1024x655 GMP_Slide1570_Hunslet3688_MarleyHill.jpg |
1965/08/05, 3. 0-6-0ST OC Area No. 23 (Bowes Railway No. 12, Hawthorn Leslie 2719/1907) approaches the flat crossing of the Bowes Railway with the Tanfield branch of BR as it heads towards Marley Hill Colliery with a loaded train of coal, perhaps from Blackburn Fell Drift, Thursday 5th August 1965. From the point just behind the engine, this cutting is now filled in to the bridge in the background to form a car park for the present day Tanfield Railway. The flat crossing still exists, but only as a headshunt from Marley Hill engine shed. 1024x663 GMP_Slide1572_HL2719_MarleyHill.jpg |
1967/07/01. The Leighton Buzzard Light Railway was built in 1919 to carry sand extracted from various local quarries to the standard gauge line from Leighton Buzzard to Dunstable. It was 2' 0" gauge (610mm) and apart from the first couple of years was operated by internal combustion locos, mainly a variety of Simplex machines. Here Simplex No. 7 is at the head of a train of Hudson tipper wagons, while No. 4 is giving a shove at the rear to get the train out of Billington Road Quarry (aka Pratt's Pit Quarry?), then across Billington Road on the level to the transhipment area. Today, this area, which is almost adjacent to the existing terminus of the preserved line at Page's Park, is now covered by a new housing estate. Saturday 1st July 1967. 1024x678 GMP_Slide2816_SandNo7_LeightonBuzzard.jpg |
1967/12/19, 1. NCB 0-6-0T (OC) WHIT No. 4 (Hudswell Clarke 1844/1951) looks newly repainted in its Yorkshire area Maroon livery as it stands in a sea of coal slurry at Water Haigh Colliery, Woodlesford, between duties on Tuesday 19th December 1967. This engine was one of several non-austerity types modified with the Gas Producer Combustion System. 1024x668 GMP_Slide3200_WhitNo.4_WaterHaigh.jpg |

1967/12/19, 4. Inside the Winding-House at Water Haigh Colliery at Woodlesford in West Yorkshire, the whole interior so beautifully kept that visitors were required to remove their shoes! Only part of one half of the winding engine can be seen in this view, the steam chest for the left hand cylinder is prominent in the foreground, the actual cylinder is half out of the picture to the left. The other half of the two cylinder engine is out of picture to the right. The winding drum is highlighted by a shaft of sunlight on the right of the picture. The engine is working, as can be seen from the blurring of the valve motion painted red on the left of the picture. All this was swept away in the name of progress....Tuesday 19th December 1967. 1024x681 GMP_Slide3204_WindingEngine_WaterHaigh.jpg |
1968/05/xx. Sitting out of use outside the loco depot at North Gawber colliery was this Hunslet "Austerity" 0-6-0ST (HE3171/1944), modified on the Gas Producer Combustion System. May 1968. 1024x670 GMP_Slide3266_NCBHunslet_NorthGawber.jpg |

Ex-LMS & BR Fowler "Jinty" 3F 0-6-0T No. 47445 has propelled a train of wagons to the unloading chute above the Calder & Hebble canal, seen in the distance, from Pepper's Yard British Oak site at Crigglestone near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. March 1969. The signal in the foreground is on the L&YR line from Barnsley to Horbury Junction and Wakefield Kirkgate. 1024x681 GMP_Slide3604_47445_BritishOak.jpg |
1969/03/xx, 02. Whoops!! Ex-LMS & BR Fowler "Jinty" 3F 0-6-0T No. 47445 has come to grief at Pepper's Yard British Oak site at Crigglestone near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. A rail had broken in the pointwork and two sets of wheels derailed. Some of the staff improvise a means of getting the engine back on the track, while others, out of the picture, attempted to start up one of the ex-BR Class 14 diesels which were also at this site. Presumably they managed to get the engine back on the rails without damage and the engine survives until today! March 1969. 1024x684 GMP_Slide3607_47445_BritishOak.jpg |
