1961/05/04. From the Geoff Plumb Collection of original slides. Ex-LB&SCR "Terrier" class A1X 0-6-0T No. 32678 pauses at North Hayling station with a train from Havant to Hayling Island on the afternoon of Thursday 4th May 1961. Photograph by D.E. White. 32678 was originally class A1 introduced by Stroudley in 1872 -1880, this engine being built at Brighton Works in July 1880. The class was modified to A1X from 1911. This engine was originally named "Knowle" and carried the name "Bembridge" whilst later working on the Isle of Wight. It was returned to the mainland and withdrawn from service in October 1963. It was one of several that made it into preservation and is still in working order some 128 years after being built! The Hayling Island branch was closed in 1963, being worked by A1X tanks right up until the end. The trackbed is now the "Hayling Billy" trail footpath and cycleway. 1024x680 GMP_CollectSlide29357_32678_NorthHayling.jpg |

1962/12/02, 2. The engines were due to take water here, but the supply had frozen - the Fire Brigade were called to bring water and it almost got to the point where the fires were to be thrown out but the appliances arrived in time to replenish the engines without taking this drastic measure! The tour was repeated two weeks later when an alternative water supply was laid on... 1024x644 GMP_BWNeg229_30585_30587_HamptonCourt.jpg |

1964/07/04, 1. The 40th Anniversary of the end of steam on the Southern Region has just passed, so here's the first of a few more SR shots to mark this occasion! BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73084 "Tintagel" starts its train away from the station stop at Winchfield as it works a down local from Waterloo to Salisbury, including an interesting mix of maroon and green liveried coaches. 1964/10/27, 1. SR Bulleid rebuilt "Merchant Navy" Class 4-6-2 No. 35023 "Holland - Afrika Line" has the road and is raring to go, but the water column "bag" is still in the tender, replenishing the water supply as it waits to leave Southampton Central station with the down "Bournemouth Belle" from Waterloo. A friend and I had travelled down from Waterloo and enjoyed a splendid lunch (we were 15 years old at the time!) but couldn't afford to travel any further at Pullman rates! Note the dockyard cranes in the background, the large funnel just visible on the left above the driver's greasetop cap belongs to RMS "Queen Elizabeth" then still in service. 1965/01/30. Not a brilliant picture, but a unique occasion unfortunately in utterly foul weather. The funeral train of Sir Winston Churchill, hauled by unrebuilt Bulleid "Battle of Britain" Class 4-6-2 No. 34051 "Winston Churchill", passes the west end of Feltham Yard en route from Waterloo, departure time 13:28 to Handborough, where arrival time was 15:23. 1965/04/24, 3. It wasn't all glamour jobs for the Bulleid Pacifics! Unrebuilt "West Country" Class 4-6-2 No. 34006 "Bude", still carrying its nameplates but in filthy condition, approaches Fleet station with a down ballast train, perhaps returning to Meldon Quarry for refilling. 1965/04/24, 5. Rebuilt "West Country" Class 4-6-2 No. 34048 "Crediton" bowls along the down slow line near Fleet with a lightweight Basingstoke "stopper", the 14:54 from Waterloo on Saturday 24th April 1965. 1024x655 GMP_Slide1295_34048_Fleet.jpg |
1965/04/24, 6. Bulleid rebuilt "MN" Class 4-6-2 No. 35023 "Holland-Afrika Line" near Fleet with a down Bournemouth express on Saturday 24th April 1965. 1965/05/22, 1. A nicely cleaned-up unrebuilt "Battle of Britain" Class 4-6-2, No. 34051 "Winston Churchill", has arrived at Basingstoke station with a down mixed goods train which it has worked from Nine Elms. It has caused quite a stir amongst the local enthusiasts as a clean engine was fairly rare by this time! The engine came off the train here and was replaced by a Standard Class 4 4-6-0, while 34051 went on shed. It later worked light engine to Birmingham to work a railtour the following day, presumably the reason it was so clean! Saturday 22nd May 1965. 1024x671 GMP_Slide1320_34051_Basingstoke.jpg |
1965/05/22, 2. On the left, unrebuilt "Battle of Britain" Class 4-6-2 No. 34051 "Winston Churchill" is in charge of a mixed goods train it has hauled from Nine Elms and is about to enter the yard, where a Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 took over the train. 34051 then went to the loco shed on the right of the picture before leaving again as a light engine to Birmingham for a special train the following day. On the right, "Merchant Navy" Class 4-6-2 No. 35029 "Ellerman Lines" is arriving with the northbound "Pines Express", Bournemouth to Manchester, which it worked as far as Reading. 1965/05/22, 3. Rebuilt Bulleid "West Country" Class 4-6-2 No. 34032 "Camelford" has just passed Basingstoke with an up express from Bournemouth to Waterloo. 1965/05/22, 4. This caused some bewilderment when it first appeared in the distance! BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 No. 75076 is propelling a snowplough, recently ex-works, along the down slow line as it approaches Basingstoke. Quite where it had come from or was going to I have no idea! The plough seems to be mounted on an old steam engine tender. Saturday 22nd May 1965. 1024x660 GMP_Slide1327_75076_Basingstoke.jpg |
1965/05/22, 5. Bulleid "Merchant Navy" 4-6-2 No. 35027 "Port Line" rumbles into Basingstoke station with a down Bournemouth express, passing a nice array of semaphore signals for up trains. Saturday 22nd May 1965. 1024x679 GMP_Slide1333_35027_Basingstoke.jpg |
