The railway went into Prinzenkopf tunnel as soon as it crossed the bridge, emerging alongside the river again at the far end. There is also much riverborne traffic as witnessed by the barges and their crews. Tuesday 6th April 1971. 1024x669 GMP_Slide6506_044xxx_BullayViaduct.jpg |

The railway comes across a viaduct over the river immediately at the other end of the tunnel, the far bank has the station at Bullay and the nearside is close to the village of Alf. Bullay's semaphore distant signal (Formvorsignal), on the right of the picture, is showing that the next main signal (Formhauptsignal) will be showing clear with line speed, for a train about to enter the tunnel. The double-headed 2-10-0s, a Class 50 leading and a Class 44 as train engine and their freight train are about to dive into Prinzenkopf Tunnel as soon as they leave the bridge en route to Trier. The river made a large loop here, the railway tunnel cut off this loop and the other end of the tunnel is immediately above the river once again. Germany. 1971/04/12, 3. One of the oldest engines of the class still working at that time was unrebuilt No. 001 008-2, built in 1925 as part of the Einheitslokomotiven (Standard Locomotives) programme after the formation of Deutsche Reichsbahn. 231 engines were built, many of which were later rebuilt into different forms, including 50 with new welded boilers (DB from 1957), 35 rebuilds to Class 01.5 (DR from 1961) and 5 other rebuilds (DB 1950/51). The four cylinder compound engines also built in 1925 as Class 02 were rebuilt as two cylinder simple engines in 1942 and re-classified as Class 01, adding 10 engines to the class. Here, the engine is drifting down the gradients and sharp curves (the train has just passed over the arched bridge in the background) with a train from Hof to Lichtenfels on Monday 12th April 1971. 1024x669 GMP_Slide6825_001008-2_Marktschorgast.jpg |

Germany. 1971/04/16, 1. DB 2-8-4T No. 065 001-0 was the first of its class built by Krauss-Maffei in 1951 as part of the post-war new build programme, but the class came too late to make any real impact. Only 18 engines were built between 1951 and 1956, so they were not widespread. Germany. 1971/09/17, 1. The DR version of the post-war 2-8-4T was classified 65/10 and differed considerably from the DB version. 88 locos were built between 1954 and 1957, all were fitted with Giesl ejector chimneys from 1967. The driving wheels were larger than the DB version, 1600mm against 1500mm as were the leading and trailing wheels, 1000mm against 850mm. The rear bogie had a rather strange outside frame and the engines had a large bunker but very small tanks. Germany. 1971/09/18, 1. One of the occupants of Halle P depot, VES - Halle, was 03/10 class 3 cylinder 4-6-2 No. 03 0010-3, experimentally fitted with a Giesl ejector chimney and blast-pipe. This was one of the engines built in 1939-40, originally No. 03 1010 and streamlined. The loco is now preserved and carries its original 03 1010 number and conventional chimney and is still based in Halle. Saturday 18th September 1971. 1024x675 GMP_Slide7911_030010_Halle.jpg |
Germany. 1971/09/18, 2. This magnificent beast was rebuilt by DR (East German Railways) from a Baden Railways IV h Class 4 cylinder compound Pacific No. 18 314 in 1960 and was renumbered 02 0314-1 during the computerisation scheme. It was based at VES-M Halle depot, where it is seen on the turntable. This depot was akin to the Derby Technical Centre and this engine was used for high speed braking tests (it was passed for 100mph running) among other activities. With its 2100mm (6'10½") driving wheels and semi-streamlined casing it was quite a beauty, especially as it carried dark green livery with white stripes. The engine is now in the museum at Sinsheim, near Stuttgart. One of its shedmates was 18 201 another rebuild in 1961 with 2300mm driving wheels. 18 201 is still operational and still passed for 100mph running!
