Mainly steam but also some diesel and electric locos in both West & East Germany, and Austria, mostly taken in the early to mid 1970's. Pictures are in alphabetical country order and then chronological order, oldest first. More will be added as time permits!

I have now moved the Polish pictures to a collection of their own!

Austria. 1973/01/24, 4. At the other end of the rack from Eisenerz over the "Iron Mountain" at Vordernberg, the line met up with the electrified route to Leoben. Ore trains were worked from Erzberg to Vordernberg by the rack tanks and then continued their journey behind non-rack traction. 0-6-2RT No. 97.210 is on one end of a set of empty ore wagons, another engine on the rear, as the train departs for Erzberg. Note the railbuses stabled in the sidings for passenger workings down the valley. Wednesday 24th January 1973.

They are hauling empty iron ore wagons up the rack line from Vordernberg to Präbichl and on to Erzberg for the train to be loaded. It will then return to Vordernberg where electric traction takes over for the run to the steel works at Leoben. Thursday 25th January 1973.

The line continued further to Klaus, but at this stage, this was as far as passenger trains ran. The line closed in 1982 but fortunately, part of the line survives and is still in operation as a tourist railway. Happily, this loco also survives in preservation. The engine is Krauss standard class U, works No. 3711, built in Linz in 1898.
