1962/08/21, 1. LMS rebuilt "Royal Scot" Class 4-6-0 No. 46167 "The Hertfordshire Regiment" is working a northbound express on the down fast line as it approaches Bushey Troughs on Tuesday 21st August 1962. 1024x695 GMP_BWNeg165_46167_BusheyTroughs.jpg |
1962/08/21, 2. LMS Stanier "Duchess" Class 4-6-2 No. 46250 "City of Lichfield" about to go onto the water troughs at Bushey with a down express to Carlisle and Glasgow on the afternoon of Tuesday 21st August 1962. 1024x688 GMP_BWNeg166_46250_BusheyTroughs.jpg |
1962/08/21, 3. LMS Stanier "Duchess" Class 4-6-2 No. 46241 "City of Edinburgh" has its scoop in the water troughs at Bushey as it makes for Euston on the up fast line with "The Merseyside Express" on Tuesday 21st August 1962. 1024x703 GMP_BWNeg167_46241_BusheyTroughs.jpg |
1963/03/xx. A very poor negative taken in very poor light, but an unusual subject. English Electric 2000hp Type 4 1 Co-Co 1 diesel electric No. D322 picks up water from the troughs at Bushey as it heads north with a down express from Euston. The water was to replenish the tanks for the steam heating boiler to keep the coaches warm. This loco was also the first of its class to be withdrawn, in September 1967 after sustaining collision damage. What would have been its "TOPS" number of 40122 was taken by the first member of the class, D200, now preserved. March 1963. 1024x643 GMP_BWNeg_D322_BusheyTroughs.jpg |
1963/06/06, 1. In less than ideal lighting circumstances with the high sun straight along the track, LMS "Jubilee" 4-6-0 No. 45608 "Gibraltar" heads north along the WCML with a down fitted freight on the relief line between Hatch End and Carpenders Park. Thursday 6th June 1963. 1024x612 GMP_Slide84_45608_CarpendersPark.jpg |
1963/06/06, 2. An early attempt at a "panning" shot! Not a brilliant picture, but I am a bit short of photos of "Coronation" class Pacifics in action. 46235 "City of Birmingham" is relatively clean, though relegated to lesser duties than express passenger trains. Here she heads north near Carpenders Park with an express fitted freight train, Thursday 6th June 1963. Just over a year later the class had disappeared, though 46235 survived and today is in "Millennium Point" in Birmingham. 1024x631 GMP_Slide85_46235_CarpendersPark.jpg |
1963/06/06, 3. LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48414 trundles southwards with a mixed goods train between Carpenders Park and Hatch End on the WCML on Thursday 6th June 1963. 1024x632 GMP_Slide86_48414_CarpendersPark.jpg |
1963/06/07, 1. LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48651 trundles southwards on the up slow line at Bushey Troughs with a train load of coal behind the tender in 16 ton wagons. The cutting side is covered in wild flowers - presumably they got well watered! Friday 7th June 1963. 1024x670 GMP_Slide88_48651_Bushey.jpg |
1963/06/07, 2. LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48445 is on the up fast at Bushey Troughs with a southbound express fitted freight including container wagons, Friday 7th June 1963. 1024x665 GMP_Slide97_48445_Bushey.jpg |
1963/06/07, 3. LMS Ivatt 2-6-0 No. 43018 is a Watford (1C) engine and is not far from home as it trundles along the up slow line at Bushey Troughs with a train of cable drums for preliminary electrification works, Friday 7th June 1963. 1024x682 GMP_Slide98_43018_Bushey.jpg |
1963/06/08, 1. LMS Rebuilt "Royal Scot" Class 4-6-0 No. 46148 "The Manchester Regiment" picks up water from the troughs at Bushey with a down express from London Euston, Saturday 8th June 1963. 1024x667 GMP_Slide101_46148_Bushey.jpg |
1963/06/08, 2. LMS Stanier "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46239 "City of Chester" picks up water from the troughs at Bushey with a light weight up express, Saturday 8th June 1963. 1024x656 GMP_Slide102_46239_Bushey.jpg |

1963/10/05, 1. BR Standard "Britannia" Class 7P 4-6-2 No. 70047 (the only member of the class not to be named - though someone seems to have attempted to scrawl a name of some sort on the smoke deflector!) is heading south at Carpender's Park with an up special express, 1Z35, to London Euston, Saturday 5th October 1963. 1024x619 GMP_Slide416_70047_CarpendersPark.jpg |

The platforms on the main lines were in the process of being demolished prior to electrification, the photo taken from the end of the truncated footbridge. 1024x679 GMP_Slide417_42814_HatchEnd.jpg |
1963/10/12, 1. LMS Stanier "Coronation" Class 8P 4-6-2 No 46254 "City of Stoke-on-Trent" on the back road above the canal at Willesden MPD. Its motion has been dropped - did the engine ever work again? Alongside is "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 45044. Saturday 12th October 1963. 1024x681 GMP_Slide418_46254_Willesden.jpg |

1963/11/17. Stanier LMS "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46245 "City of London" has just arrived at Crewe staion from Euston with an LCGB special, 1X68, "The Stanier Pacific Rail Tour" and is now going for servicing. The tour returned via Shrewsbury and Birmingham Snow Hill into Paddington station. Sunday 17th November 1963. 1024x674 GMP_Slide454_46245_Crewe.jpg |
1963/12/15, 1. LMS Stanier "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46228 "Duchess of Rutland" simmers in the late afternoon sunshine at Willesden MPD. It is carrying headcode or reporting number 3T06, though whether that was its previous duty or its next is not clear, but was probably a Christmas parcels special. Behind is an unidentified 9F 2-10-0, while alongside is Class 24 Bo-Bo Diesel No. D5079 and the steam breakdown crane. Sunday 15th December 1963. 1024x677 GMP_Slide462_46228_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1963/12/15, 2. Catching a glint from the last of the evening sunshine and leaking steam from almost everywhere possible, Stanier "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46228 "Duchess of Rutland" potters about in the shed yard at Willesden MPD. It is about to go off shed carrying the headcode 3T06, possibly a Christmas parcels special train. Sunday 15th December 1963. 1024x673 GMP_Slide465_46228_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1963/12/15, 3. LMS "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 44765 was one of two engines built in 1947 with double-chimney and Timken roller bearings, here catching the last rays of the setting sun at Willesden MPD on Sunday 15th December 1963. 1024x642 GMP_Slide466_44765_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1964/01/05, 1. Taken on an incredibly dull day at Willesden MPD, LMS Stanier "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46235 "City of Birmingham" simmers on shed, with the cooling towers of Acton Power Station dominating the background. Beyond 46235 is an unidentified "Jubilee" 4-6-0. 46235 survived the cutter's torch and is now preserved in Birmingham, still in BR green livery. Sunday 5th January 1964. 1024x578 GMP_Slide481_46235_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1964/01/05, 2. Sunday 5th January 1964 was a very dull day at Willesden MPD, but many engines were stabled there. BR Standard "Britannia" 4-6-2 No. 70025 "Western Star", allocated to Crewe North MPD (5A), was amongst them, along with an unidentified "Royal Scot" 4-6-0 behind it and the almost maroon liveried tender of 46240 "City of Coventry" is alongside. The steam breakdown crane just edges into the picture on the extreme left. 1024x676 GMP_Slide484_70025_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1964/01/05, 3. A couple of young spotters wander through the grime at a very dull Willesden MPD on Sunday 5th January 1964. They are just walking past an unidentified "Royal Scot" 4-6-0 and approaching another 4-6-0, this one a rebuilt "Patriot" class, No. 45534 "E. Tootal Broadhurst". It is still adorned with the reporting number 1A00, so had presumably arrived in London at the head of an express, perhaps hauling it from Crewe as it was a 5A, Crewe North MPD, allocated engine. 1024x674 GMP_Slide485_45534_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1964/02/02, 1. Stanier 5MT Mogul 2-6-0 No. 42947 is stabled in steam at Willesden MPD on Sunday 2nd February 1964. These engines were sometimes referred to as "Lobsters", to differentiate them from the Hughes-Fowler "Crab" 2-6-0's. 1024x672 GMP_Slide505_42947_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1964/02/02, 2. BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 No. 78063 was one of several allocated to Willesden MPD for ECS duties in and out of Euston station. Surplus to requirements at the weekend it is stabled in steam at its home depot on Sunday 2nd February 1964. Beyond is classmate No. 78039, behind is Stanier 2-6-4T No. 42581 and alongside is BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73038. 1024x671 GMP_Slide506_78063_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1964/02/09. LMS Stanier "Jubilee" 5XP 4-6-0 No. 45584 "North West Frontier" in charge of a works train at Hatch End station on the West Coast Main Line. The original roadbridge over the station had been demolished that morning for the new electrification scheme and the train was there for the removal of the debris. The engine has definitely seen better days! Sunday 9th February 1964. 1024x669 GMP_Slide514_45584_HatchEnd.jpg |
1964/05/03, 1. LMS Stanier "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46245 "City of London" in nicely clean condition at Willesden MPD, Sunday 3rd May 1964. Immediately behind is BR Standard 4-6-2 No. 70021 "Morning Star" with another "Brit" behind that. In the background is a Class 24 Bo-Bo Diesel, possibly D5104, in original green livery. 1024x658 GMP_Slide632_46245_Willesden.jpg |
1964/05/03, 2. LMS English Electric 1600hp Co-Co diesel electric No. 10001 is stabled at Willesden MPD, together with an unidentified EE Type 1 (later Class 20). 10001 was withdrawn in March 1966 and scrapped by Cox & Danks in North Acton in February 1968. Sunday 3rd May 1964. 1024x624 GMP_Slide633_10001_Willesden.jpg |
1964/05/03, 3. BR Standard "Britannia" Class 4-6-2 No. 70021 "Morning Star" sits simmering between duties at Willesden MPD on Sunday 3rd May 1964. On the extreme left can be seen the maroon painted rear of the tender of 46245 "City of London", this is the remains of the streamlined fairing which still overhung the tender back, even after de-streamlining. 1024x677 GMP_Slide635_70021_Willesden.jpg |
1964/09/05. BR Standard "Britannia" Class 4-6-2 No. 70004 "William Shakespeare" is still in relatively clean lined green livery, though nothing like it was as a regular engine on the "Golden Arrow" based at Stewarts Lane MPD. Here it is passing Carpenders Park on the West Coast Main Line with a long train of vans, northbound on the down slow line. Saturday 5th September 1964. 1024x680 GMP_Slide1052_70004_CarpendersPark.jpg |
1964/09/26. The last surviving LMS "Princess Coronation" class 4-6-2 No. 46256 "Sir William A Stanier FRS" stands at Crewe station at the head of the RCTS "Scottish Lowlander Railtour", which it worked to Carlisle. There, LNER A4 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" took over for the run via the Waverley route to Edinburgh and was itself replaced by 60009 "Union of South Africa". This engine worked the train to Glasgow and via Kilmarnock back to Carlisle where 46256 took over once again for the run back to Crewe. On arrival back at Crewe the engine was withdrawn from service and so passed the era of the Stanier Pacifics. Saturday 26th September 1964. 1024x652 GMP_Slide1057_46256_Crewe.jpg |
1964/12/27. Sunday 27th December 1964 was another lovely day at Willesden MPD (1A)! The shed area is mostly occupied by steam engines, and most are in steam ready for the following day's work. Over on the far left a couple of Class 24 diesels are lurking in front of the roundhouse, then Fairburn 2-6-4T No. 42071 alongside Standard 4MT 2-6-0 No. 76039. The remainder of the engines are unidentified, but seem to be mostly Standard types, a "Black 5" and more 2-6-4Ts. 1024x681 GMP_Slide1137_GV_WillesdenMPD.jpg |
1964/xx/xx. From the Geoff Plumb Collection of original slides. LMS "Jinty" No. 47326 is station pilot at Carlisle Citadel station and is involved in shunting a mix of vans and postal vans at the south end of the station. It is presumably carrying the headcode lamps for a pilot engine, that is one white lamp and one red lamp at each end of the engine (it's unlikely to be a "Class 1" headcode!), but which lamp is showing which colour is difficult to decide in daylight! On the right is an unidentified "Royal Scot" 4-6-0, perhaps waiting to take over a southbound express. Dated at some time in 1964, photographer unknown. 1024x662 GMP_CollectSlide29376_47326_Carlisle.jpg |
1965/02/13, 1. On a freezing cold Saturday 13th February 1965, LMS rebuilt "Royal Scot" 4-6-0 No. 46115 "Scots Guardsman" is raring to go as it waits at the head of the RCTS "Rebuilt Scot Commemorative Railtour", 1X80, at Crewe station. Departure time was 09:15 and the destination was Carlisle via Blackburn, Hellifield and the Settle and Carlisle line, return via Shap. The nameplates on the engine are wooden replicas, the few survivors of the class expected to be out of service soon after, though in the event a few soldiered on until October 1965. Happily, this engine survived and has now made a return to the main line. The yellow diagonal stripe on the cabside denoted that the engine was no longer allowed to work south of Crewe under the overhead line equipment. 1024x684 GMP_Slide1144_46115_Crewe.jpg |
1965/02/13, 2. The engine crew chat with tour passengers on a sunny but freezing cold Saturday 13th February 1965, as LMS rebuilt "Royal Scot" 4-6-0 No.46115 "Scots Guardsman" is raring to go as it waits at the head of the RCTS "Rebuilt Scot Commemorative Railtour", 1X80, at Crewe station. 1965/02/13, 3. LMS Ivatt 2-6-2T No. 41222 on station pilot duties at Carlisle Citadel station, shunting some parcels vans around on the late afternoon of Saturday 13th February 1965. The light was already insufficient for a short exposure, so the moving engine is somewhat blurred, but a pleasing picture nevertheless. 41222 was one of the class fitted with auto-train control equipment and had been a regular engine on the Wolverton to Newport Pagnell branch trains, while it was allocated to Bletchley MPD. 1024x678 GMP_Slide1192_41222_Carlisle.jpg |
1965/06/26, 1. LMS "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 44938 simmers outside Bletchley MPD together with several classmates on Saturday 26th June 1965. 1024x681 GMP_Slide1378_44938_Bletchley.jpg |
1965/06/26, 2. BR Standard 2MT 2-6-2T No. 84002 dumped out of use in the back of the MPD at Bletchley on Saturday 26th June 1965. Fitted with auto-train control equipment, at one time it had been a regular engine on the Wolverton to Newport Pagnell branch. 1024x677 GMP_Slide1379_84002_Bletchley.jpg |
1965/06/26, 3. BR Standard 2MT 2-6-2T No. 84002 stored in the back of the shed at Bletchley MPD, Saturday 26th June 1965. 1024x677 GMP_Slide1380_84002_Bletchley.jpg |
1965/06/27. Steam meets diesel under the wires! During the transition period from steam to diesel and then electric traction, such meetings were relatively common. An unidentified Stanier 8F 2-8-0 is heading south with a permanent way train of track panels, while an English Electric Type 4 diesel (later Class 40) is in charge of a down express, about to pass near Bourne End with Winkwell Lock on the Grand Union Canal in the foreground. Sunday 27th June 1965. 1024x587 GMP_Slide1383_8F_Class40_BourneEnd.jpg |
1965/07/04. LMS Stanier "Princess Royal" Class 4-6-2 No. 46201 "Princess Elizabeth" was stored for a while at Dowty's yard in Ashchurch, prior to restoration to main line running. Almost in "as bought" condition from BR here she is on Sunday 4th July 1965. 1024x677 GMP_Slide1389_46201_Ashchurch.jpg |
1965/10/xx, 1. From the Geoff Plumb Collection of original slides. Rebuilt "Royal Scot" class 4-6-0 No. 46140 "The King's Royal Rifle Corps" was one of the last survivors of the class and is here making steady progress up Shap at Scout Green with a down fitted freight on a sunny evening in October 1965. It was withdrawn from service the following month. Photographer unknown. 1024x666 GMP_CollectSlide28687_46140_ScoutGreen.jpg |
1965/10/xx, 2. From the Geoff Plumb Collection of original slides. The fireman has little to do but admire the scenery as "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 45138 has steam to spare trundling down the 1 in 75 gradient of Shap with a very short goods train, passing Scout Green signalbox on an October evening in 1965. Photographer unknown. 1024x665 GMP_CollectSlide28686_45138_ScoutGreen.jpg |
1966/07/20. "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 44834 potters about at Carnforth with a brakevan in tow, while classmate 45092 is running light engine alongside. Wednesday 20th July 1966. 1024x610 GMP_Slide2269_44834_Carnforth.jpg |
1966/07/21, 1. A southbound goods train consisting mainly of boxvans trundles along the water troughs at Brock with single-chimneyed 9F 2-10-0 No. 92152 in charge. On the far right of the picture is a glimpse of the erstwhile Preston by-pass which became the first part of the M6 motorway. Thursday 21st July 1966. 1024x667 GMP_Slide2275_92152_BrockTroughs.jpg |

1966/07/21, 3. BR Standard "Britannia" 4-6-2 No. 70033 "Charles Dickens" works southwards at Hest Bank with an up semi-fitted freight on the glorious afternoon of Thursday 21st July 1966. 1024x649 GMP_Slide2287_70033_HestBank.jpg |
1966/07/21, 4. LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-0 "Mickey Mouse" No. 46486 was one of the class fitted with the narrow chimney and it is here running tenderfirst light engine on the down line near Morecambe North Junction, Hest Bank station in the background, as it returns to Carnforth MPD. The track in the foreground is the bi-directional line to and from Morecambe. Thursday 21st July 1966. 1024x660 GMP_Slide2288_46486_HestBank.jpg |
1966/07/21, 5. LMS "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 44790 heading north along the West Coast Main Line at Morecambe North Junction (also known as Hest Bank North Junction), just south of Hest Bank, the near track branching off in the middle distance towards Morecambe. The engine is in charge of a fitted freight, mainly of box wagons with an interesting looking wagon immediately behind the leading brakevan. Thursday 21st July 1966. 1024x672 GMP_Slide2289_44790_HestBankNthJcn.jpg |
1966/07/21, 6. 1966/07/21, 7. "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 44894 looks quite smart as it draws its train to a stop at Hest Bank station on the afternoon of Thursday 21st July 1966. It is carrying Class 1 headcode lamps and the five coach train is the "Lake Windermere Cruise", stopping here before setting off towards Morecambe. The engine has its 10A shedcode painted on the smokebox door, also "Carnforth" painted on the bufferbeam to make doubly sure! 1024x659 GMP_Slide2297_44894_HestBank.jpg |
