1963/04/20. LNER A3 4-6-2 No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" at Paddington with its first train in preservation, the Ffestiniog Railway Society special to Porthmadog via Llangollen which the A3 worked as far as Ruabon, Saturday 20th April 1963.

1973/07/15, 1. GWR 61xx Class 2-6-2T No. 6106 is topping the train, while "Modified Hall" 4-6-0 No. 6998 "Burton Agnes Hall" is tailing the six coaches as they approach Cookham station with a working from Maidenhead to Bourne End as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the Marlow branch over the weekend of 14th & 15th July 1973. This was on the rather miserable Sunday afternoon.

1973/07/15, 2. GWR "Modified Hall" Class 4-6-0 No. 6998 "Burton Agnes Hall" is now leading the train on its return from Bourne End to Maidenhead during the celebrations for the centenary of the branch line from Bourne End to Marlow, on the weekend of 14th & 15th July 1973. 61xx 2-6-2T No. 6106 is on the rear of the train as it passes through Cookham on the very wet and miserable afternoon of Sunday 15th July 1973.

1973/07/15, 3. While 6998 "Burton Agnes Hall" and 2-6-2T No. 6106 were working shuttles between Maidenhead and Bourne End, 14xx Class 0-4-2T No. 1450 was working a two-coach Autotrain between Bourne End and Marlow - the "Marlow Donkey". Here, 1450 is seen near Little Marlow en route from Marlow to Bourne End, during the celebrations to mark 100 years of the branch over the weekend of 14th & 15th July 1973.

1977/06/12. LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No. 1306 "Mayflower" on one of its rare main line outings on Sunday 12th June 1977. It was working from Carnforth to Leeds and York and is here approaching Thackley Tunnel with a train of Mk.1 coaches and several vintage carriages. This was during the period of the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations, hence the flags carried on the engine.

1984/08/21. LMS Stanier 8P "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46229 "Duchess of Hamilton" stands at Scarborough station with the return working of the "Scarborough Spa Express" to York, round the Harrogate circle and back to York. Alongside is the station pilot, Class 03 0-6-0DM No. 03073, doing some shunting. Tuesday 21st August 1984.

1986/01/12. LNER A3 Class 4-6-2 No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" makes a volcanic start away from the station stop at High Wycombe with "The Half-Century Limited", Bill McAlpine's Birthday Special! Sunday 12th January 1986.

1986/10/11, 1. LNER "Pacifics" line up at Marylebone Depot in London, on the right is A4 4468 "Mallard", in the centre is A3 4472 "Flying Scotsman" and on the left is A4 4498 "Sir Nigel Gresley". All are in steam before duties the following day. Saturday 11th October 1986.

1986/12/13, 1. During the season of "Santa Specials" running in December 1986 between Marylebone and High Wycombe, light engine movements were required so that trains could be reversed quickly at each end of the trip. A3 4472 "Flying Scotsman" is running tenderfirst to High Wycombe before the first train of the day and is seen here at speed near Seer Green on Saturday 13th December 1986.

1986/12/20, 1. BR (S) rebuilt Bulleid "Merchant Navy" Class 4-6-2 No. 35028 "Clan Line" simmers peacefully at Marylebone depot on the evening of Saturday 20th December 1986, between "Santa Steam Pullman" duties earlier that day and on the following day.

1986/12/20, 3. SR N15 "King Arthur" Class 4-6-0 No. 777 "Sir Lamiel" simmers overnight at Marylebone Depot, London, on the evening of Saturday 20th December 1986. It had been on "Santa Specials" duty that day and was scheduled for more the following day, working to and from High Wycombe.

1986/12/28. A3 No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" attacks the climb of Saunderton Bank in fine style with the "Shakespeare Limited", 11:10 from Marylebone to Stratford-upon-Avon and return on a somewhat wild Sunday 28th December 1986. Note the ETHEL unit behind the engine for train heating. These ElectricTrainHeatingExLocomotives were rebuilt from former Class 25 diesel electric locos.

1987/03/21. LNER A3 4-6-2 No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" is working hard as it comes under the footbridge at Saunderton station, on the climb of Saunderton Bank. It is hauling the Hertfordshire Railtours "South Yorkshire Pullman", 08:00 from Marylebone to Sheffield and return, at about 09:15 on Saturday 21st March 1987. Note the "ETHEL" behind the tender and also the engine is carrying its "TOPS" number, 98772!

1987/03/22. LNER A3 4-6-2 No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" tackling the climb of Saunderton Bank in fine style with the "Shakespeare Limited Express" from Marylebone to Stratford-upon-Avon and return on Sunday 22nd March 1987.

1987/12/13. LMS "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 5305 with an up "Santa's Steam Special" from High Wycombe to Marylebone near Seer Green & Jordans on the cold but sunny morning of Sunday 13th December 1987.

1990/05/19. With a rake of immaculate Mk. 1 coaches in InterCity livery in tow, GWR "King" Class 4-6-0 No. 6024 "King Edward I" accelerates away from Didcot Parkway and approaches Didcot North Junction with a charter special from London Paddington (hauled by 47835 to Didcot) to Stratford-upon-Avon and return. The "King" worked the return train as far as Banbury. I wonder how long the pristine white roofs of the coaches lasted? Saturday 19th May 1990.

1992/12/20, 1. BR Standard "Britannia" Class 4-6-2 No. 70000 "Britannia" opens up now its 11 coach train has cleared the junction at Greenford having started from Ealing Broadway. This was the "William Shakespeare Express" to Stratfod-upon-Avon and return, seen from the old platforms of the main line station at Greenford at 10:45 on Sunday 20th December 1992.

1992/12/20, 2. BR Standard 4-6-2 No. 70000 "Britannia" waits departure time at Stratford-upon-Avon station with a train returning to Ealing Broadway on a freezing December evening in 1992.

1992/12/20, 3. On a freezing Sunday evening in December 1992, BR Standard 4-6-2 No. 70000 "Britannia" attempts to start its heavy train away from Stratford-upon-Avon on icy rails. The train is just on the move but the engine is slipping furiously (sparks can be seen coming off the wheels amidst the steam from the sanders!). About three flashguns have gone off and "frozen" the image, but is is far from perfect. It took almost 30 minutes from opening the regulator until the last coach cleared the platform!

1997/01/25, 09:40. Southern Railway Bulleid rebuilt "Merchant Navy" Class 4-6-2 No. 35028 "Clan Line" comes out of the winter morning mist at Woolhampton with "The Treacle Eater" from London Paddington to Yeovil Junction and return via Southampton. Saturday 25th January 1997.

1997/01/25, 10:40. BR(S) rebuilt Bulleid "Merchant Navy" Class 4-6-2 No. 35028 "Clan Line" passing the classic spot at Little Bedwyn alongside the Kennet & Avon canal on the Berks & Hants line. It is working "The Treacle Eater" from London Paddington to Yeovil Junction and return via Salisbury and Southampton. Saturday 25th January 1997.

1997/02/15. Southern Railway rebuilt Bulleid "West Country" Class 4-6-2 No. 34027 "Taw Valley" has just passed Midgham station, Woolhampton, with "The Bristolian" from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads via Westbury, 09:42 Saturday 15th February 1997. This was during the period the engine carried a rather strange shade of green paint!

1997/03/15, 1. GWR "King" Class 4-6-0 No. 6024 "King Edward I" has set off from Didcot and is leaving a smokescreen across South Moreton with the "Quantock Ranger" from Ealing Broadway to Minehead via the Berks & Hants line. This had arrived behind a Class 47 diesel and reversed at Didcot. 08:55, Saturday 15th March 1997.

On the Berks & Hants line alongside the Kennet & Avon canal at Froxfield lower lock, 6024 "King Edward I" is on the long climb to Savernake summit with 1Z24 "The Quantock Ranger" from Ealing Broadway to Minehead, steam hauled from Didcot via Reading West. 10:22, Saturday 15th March 1997.

1997/11/22, 1. Southern Railway "U" Class 2-6-0 No. 31625 is double-heading with Class 33 Bo-Bo diesel No. D6593 at South Moreton, soon after sunrise as they head west along the GWML with the "Pines Express" from Guildford to Crewe. Saturday 22nd November 1997.

Southern Railway "U" Class 2-6-0 No. 31625 is getting into its stride again after the water stop at Banbury, double-heading with Class 33 Bo-Bo diesel No. D6593 at Great Bourton as they head north along the Cherwell valley with the"Pines Express" from Guildford to Crewe. 09:56, Saturday 22nd November 1997.

1998/01/10, 1. As the "dreaming spires" of Oxford shiver in the background, winter sunshine and cold air combine to emphasise the exhaust steam from 6024 "King Edward I" heading north at Wolvercote with "The Cathedrals Express" which it worked from Didcot to Gloucester and return via Sapperton, 10:26, Saturday 10th January 1998.

1998/01/10, 2. More "contre-jour" splendour as 6024 "King Edward I" gets into its stride once more at Great Bourton after the water stop at Banbury, 11:20 on Saturday 10th January 1998, running on time. 1Z27, "The Cathedrals Express" from Paddington, steam hauled from Didcot to Gloucester and return via Sapperton.

1999/04/25. Looking resplendent in BR Brunswick Green livery, LNER Gresley V2 2-6-2 No. 60800 "Green Arrow" takes the Berks & Hants line at Southcote Junction with "The Mayflower" from London Paddington to Plymouth, 09:20, Sunday 25th April 1999.

1999/06/06. LNER Gresley A4 Class 4-6-2 No. 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" is romping along its old stamping ground on the East Coast Main Line at Arlesey with the "A4 Finale" from London King's Cross to York and Scarborough and return. This was one of the engine's final runs before undergoing another overhaul. 10:25, Sunday 6th June 1999. There was supposed to be a Class 47 diesel on the rear as "insurance", but it had failed at King's Cross, thus delaying the train, which was about 40 minutes late at this point. Time had been regained by the stop for water at Doncaster!

1999/08/01. It's 08:51 on Sunday 1st August 1999 and already very warm, so although 6024 "King Edward I" is working quite hard, no exhaust steam is showing. It is heading west along the GWML at Bourton, between Shrivenham and Swindon with "The Devon Belle" from London Paddington to Kingswear, the "King" taking over the train from Didcot.

2001/03/03. GWR "Hall" class 4-6-0s Nos. 4965 "Rood Ashton Hall" and 4936 "Kinlet Hall" are double-heading "The Flying Carpet" special from Kidderminster to Paddington, 10 coaches from the BN91 set. They have just passed Fenny Compton at 10:05 on the very cold but sunny Saturday 3rd March 2001.

2001/04/28. LNER A3 4-6-2 No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" heads south through Shipton station on the Cotswold line with 1Z91, 16:20 from Worcester Shrub Hill, steam hauled as far as Oxford. This was a Newmarket Promotions Charter, commencing from and returning to Bournemouth diesel hauled. 17:40 on the afternoon of Saturday 28th April 2001. Compare this with the shot of D7018 at the same spot with 1A48 in 1973...

2001/08/04. GWR "Castle" Class 4-6-0 No. 5029 "Nunney Castle" is working hard as it approaches the level-crossing at Ufton Nervet with the ten coaches of "The Torbay Castle", 06:27 from Paddington to Kingswear and return. It was running on time at 07:55, the morning chill showing up the exhaust steam. Saturday 4th August 2001.
