Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway
20th November 2007

The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway was a combined venture between the Midland Railway and the London & South Western Railway, running from Bath Green Park (originally Queen Square) to Bournemouth West, over the Mendip hills. After the grouping it became joint LMS and SR and ended up as part of the BR Western Region. Prior to closure in March 1966 it had a wonderful variety of motive power and was always popular with enthusiasts. It was lovingly photographed and filmed by Ivo Peters and is sorely missed by many.

A few photos here (not up to Ivo Peters standards!), more will be added, though sadly, I only made a few visits.

1965/12/23, 1. Filthy BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73001 has the road and is ready to go as it waits the "rightaway" from Bath Green Park station with the 09:53 to Bournemouth West, over the Somerset & Dorset line. With just under four months to go before closure, things are looking pretty run down on a wet and miserable Thursday 23rd December 1965.

1965/12/23, 2. Although originally a joint Midland and L&SWR line, the Somerset & Dorset finally became part of the Western Region of BR. Filthy dirty and almost unidentifiable BR Standard 3MT 2-6-2T No. 82001 stands in the platform at Bath Green Park station with a rake of empty SR coaches which it is about to take out to the sidings, on a very wet and miserable Thursday 23rd December 1965. The station still stands, in use these days as a car park.

1965/12/23, 3. 73001 has arrived at Templecombe station with the 09:53 train from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth West. It is standing at the island platform which has the L&SWR main line at its opposite face. On departure from here it had to reverse back to the S&D main line and then set forward again to pass under the L&SWR line. On the left is LMS Ivatt 2-6-2T No. 41283 shunting some stock in the S&D side of the yard. Thursday 23rd December 1965.

1965/12/23, 4. Evercreech Junction station on a very wet and miserable Thursday 23rd December 1965 is host to BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0 No. 76006. This was in charge of the 12:05 stopping train from Templecombe to Bath Green Park. The driver has climbed up on the running plate, perhaps to clean the front spectacle plate in the cab. The centre road here was formerly used to stable and service banking engines required for the heavy freights on the climb to Masbury summit.

1966/03/06, 4. Bulleid unrebuilt "Battle of Britain" class 4-6-2 No. 34057 "Biggin Hill" stands just outside Bath Green Park station at the head of the RCTS "Somerset & Dorset Farewell Railtour" on the last day of operation on the line. It is about to be joined by rebuilt "West Country" 34013 "Okehampton" and the pair then double-headed the train over the S&DJR mainline for the last time, running in fine style to Templecombe. Sunday 6th March 1966.

1966/03/06, 5. A short ceremony was conducted at the bufferstops at Bath Green Park station, when a "requiem" was read by Charles R. Gordon-Stuart in memoriam to the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, prior to departure of the last train, the RCTS "Somerset & Dorset Farewell Railtour". A wreath of laurel leaves intertwined with RCTS ties was left on the bufferstops, together with burning candles. Sunday 6th March 1966. Fortunately, the station survives, albeit as a car park...
