Longmoor Military Railway
17th October 2007

A selection of pictures taken on the two RCTS "Longmoor Military Railtours", the first of which ran in miserable weather on Saturday 16th April 1966. The second tour ran two weeks later on Saturday 30th April 1966, this time in glorious weather!

More shots still to be added, including more recent pictures of the abandoned railway.

1966/04/16, 6. With a wonderful train of ancient coaches (including a "Birdcage" carriage) and brakevans, LMR "Austerity" 0-6-0ST No. AD196 approaches Longmoor Downs station after traversing the Hollywater loop line with the first of two trains. The number 68011 was painted on the smokebox door during filming for "The Great St. Trinian's Train Robbery". Scanned from a rather poor print taken in very poor light! Saturday 16th April 1966.

The number 68011 can just be seen painted on the smokebox door - it carried this identity for the filming of "The Great St. Trinian's Train Robbery", made on location at the railway.

Once again, WD 2-10-0 No. AD600 "Gordon" hauled the train from Woking onto the LMR at Liss, and is now running round the train before double-heading with "Austerity" 0-6-0ST No. AD195 to Longmoor Downs.

The line off to the left is the Hollywater Loop line, in the centre curving right is the "main" line to Liss Forest and Liss, while the lines on the right descend to the loco shed and yard, also Gipsy Hollow. Saturday 30th April 1966. The dual carriageway of the A3 Liphook bypass now ploughs right through this site.

1966/04/30, 4. WD "Austerity" 2-10-0s Nos. AD600 "Gordon" and AD601 "Kitchener" (both named after Army Generals) stand alongside each other at the loco depot at Longmoor Camp. "Gordon" is taking water while "Kitchener" is no longer in use. It has had some green paint plastered onto its blue LMR livery for its role in the filming of "The Great St. Trinian's Train Robbery" and has a fake BR number on the smokebox door. Saturday 30th April 1966. After the railway closed, an attempt was made to establish a preservation centre here, but sadly it failed due to adverse local pressure.

Longmoor Military Railway WD 2-10-0 No. AD 600 "Gordon" manoeuvres the stock of the RCTS "Longmoor Miltary Railtour" out of the LMR platforms before reversing into the BR platforms at Bordon, end of the branch line from Bentley. This was during the second of the tour's two runs, on Saturday 30th April 1966. The line from Bentley to Bordon closed to passengers in September 1957 and by this time the freight services had ceased as well from 4th April 1966. The track was lifted later the same year. There are now moves afoot to reopen it!

The trackbed looking towards Liss Forest is now a footpath and other odd remains of the railway could be found amongst the undergrowth. The trees alongside the platform have grown during the 26 years since closure, and quite what the site is like now, another 16 years on, I don't know! Saturday 5th September 1992.
