1965/11/02, 1. The unique BR Standard 8P 4-6-2 No. 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" in store outside the old Paint Shop at Crewe Works on Tuesday 2nd November 1965. The three cylinder engine with Caprotti valve gear, built in 1954, had not been a great success and was an early casualty. The cylinders were removed and preserved in the Science Museum in South Kensington and the remainder of the engine ended up in Woodham's yard at Barry. It was rescued as "Mission Impossible" and is now a very successful performer on the main line again. Next to it is an unidentified member of a diesel class that also did not last long, the Metropolitan Vickers Co-Bo, number series D5700 - D5719. Introduced in 1958, one of the class is also preserved. 1024x593 GMP_Slide1671_71000_CreweWks.jpg |
1965/11/02, 2. BR Standard "Britannia" Class 4-6-2 No. 70016 "Ariel" and "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 45206 have recently been outshopped and are standing on the steam test roads near the old Paint Shop. Both have been repainted, but only in unlined green and black respectively. 70016 has had its nameplate removed and someone has scrawled "Liverpool FC" on the smoke deflectors! An English Electric Type 4 diesel (Class 40) just manages to get its nose into the picture. Tuesday 2nd November 1965. 1024x666 GMP_Slide1674_70016_45206_CreweWks.jpg |

1965/12/29, 1. Two ex-LNWR G2a 0-8-0 boilers in use as part of the mechanical services for Crewe Works to supply hot water and steam for parts of the system, whose pipework can be seen on the overhead gantries. All these old boilers were replaced by the new central boilerhouse in the mid-1960's. Wednesday 29th December 1965. 1024x672 GMP_Slide1773_G2aBoilers_Crewe.jpg |

It still awaits being reunited with its tender. Some of the new pipework for the works heating system can be seen on the wall behind the engine, while a more primitive form of heating is in front of the engine! 1966/02/22. Inside the old boiler-house at Crewe Works which was still in use at the time. The shot shows the tops of the Lancashire Boilers complete with domes, steam mains and manhole doors. Considering that this was a sort of "black hole", the picture worked out quite well! Tuesday 22nd February 1966. 1024x676 GMP_Slide1828_LancashireBoilers_Crewe.jpg |
1966/11/04. The boiler from an LNWR G2a class 0-8-0 has been re-used to supply steam and hot water for part of the works mechanical services, this was one of many similar boilers scattered around the works that were replaced by the new central boilerhouse in the mid-1960's. 1967/02/14. Hanging on the wall of the "new" paint shop at Crewe Works on Tuesday 14th February 1967 were these two panels, perhaps templates for the colour schemes for the streamlined Stanier Pacifics. On the left is the Maroon with Gold stripes livery, while on the right is the Blue with Silver stripes. This is marked "Streamlined Locos 62xx - 62xx" and "Built at Crewe 1937". The Maroon version also has "Built at Crewe", though the date and numbers are not clear. These panels are now on display at the National Railway Museum in York. 1024x541 GMP_Slide2696_CrewePaintShop.jpg |
1967/10/17. BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No. 92220 "Evening Star" in the new paint shop at Crewe Works on Tuesday 17th October 1967. As the last steam locomotive built for BR at Swindon in 1960, it was deemed worthy of preservation as part of the National Collection and was restored to its original condition at Crewe. Its paintwork is complete, though the nameplates and connecting rods have still to be refitted. 1024x677 GMP_Slide3167_92220_CreweWorks.jpg |
