London Transport
26th September 2006

Despite using London Transport a fair amount, I don't know that much about it! So if anyone can help with information for captions, or correct what I've already written, I would be very grateful! I lived in Pinner (on the Metropolitan Line) for several years, so was lucky enough to see quite a lot of LT steam in the form of the ex-GWR "Pannier Tanks", some of which appear here...

Some of these pictures and several more now appear in the recently published book "Red Panniers - Last Steam on the Underground" by John Scott-Morgan and Kirk Martin from Lightmoor Press in association with the London Transport Museum. A very good read and profusely illustrated with pictures from a variety of photographers, including R.C. Riley!

1959/xx/xx. From the Geoff Plumb Collection of original slides. Metropolitan Electric No. 2 "Thomas Lord" stops at Finchley Road with a train from Baker Street to Aylesbury, which it will haul as far as Rickmansworth where it will hand over to a steam engine, most probably an ex-LMS 2-6-4T. Date & photographer unknown, but around 1959! The loco was originally named "Oliver Cromwell".

By this time, this was the last route operated by TDs, where they hung on until October 1962. Many of the redundant buses ended up in Ceylon for further service! Monday 2nd April 1962.
