Pictures on former LMS and LNER lines in Scotland, including the East Coast Main Line north of Edinburgh. A few pictures to start with, more to be added as time permits.

I made some early visits to Scotland with the RCTS in 1957 and 1960, plus some family holidays, all before I had a camera. I saw some wonderful things and have very happy memories, so I have been lucky enough to fill in some of those gaps with original slides from other photographers, some of whom are sadly now deceased. I'm very grateful that they took the shots!

1958/xx/xx, 2. From the Geoff Plumb collection of original slides. Caledonian Railway "439" Class 0-4-4T No. 55178, designed by McIntosh and introduced in 1900, at Forres, its home shed. It looks as though the engine was still in service at this time, possibly during the summer of 1958, the engine did not survive to be included in the Ian Allan ABC of 1959. Classmate No. 55189 did make it into preservation, restored as CR No. 419. Photographer unknown. 55178 was built at St. Rollox Works in March 1906, withdrawn from Forres shed in December 1958 and scrapped the following year.

LNER D40 Class 4-4-0 No. 62277 "Gordon Highlander", formerly Great North of Scotland Railway No. 49, was built by North British Locomotive Co., No. 22563/1920, to Heywood's development of the original Pickersgill design of 1899. It is about to depart from Banff with what appears to be some sort of special, exact date not known. The loco, last of its class, was withdrawn in July 1958 and restored to GNoS livery as No. 49, returning to service for special trains in 1959, so the photo cannot be later than 1958. Drummond North British Railway "Pug" Class G 0-4-0ST, LNER and BR Class Y9, No. 68123 is paired with an ancient wooden tender for its coal supplies. It is one of the shed pilots at Dundee MPD during the summer of 1958. 35 engines of this class were built between 1882 and 1899, this particular engine at Cowlairs in August 1899 and fortunately, No. 68095 survives in preservation. 68123 was withdrawn and scrapped at Cowlairs in August 1960. Caledonian "264" class "Pug" 0F 0-4-0ST No. 56025 is one of the works pilot locos at St. Rollox Works in Glasgow and is obviously well looked after, in fully-lined black livery. The class was introduced in 1885 under Drummond and McIntosh, this one built under Drummond at St. Rollox in May 1890. It was withdrawn in May 1960 and scrapped at Inverurie Works the same month. Date not recorded but probably summer 1958. Photographer unknown.

1958/xx/xx, 7. From the Geoff Plumb Collection of original slides. Caledonian Railway McIntosh "439" class 0-4-4T No. 55225 is one of the class fitted with a stove-pipe chimney. It has presumably not long been out of works as it has been repainted in plain black livery and carries the later BR totem on the tankside. It is simmering on shed at Polmadie MPD, Glasgow, sometime in summer 1958. Photographer unknown. This engine was built at St. Rollox works in October 1914 and was withdrawn in January 1962, being scrapped at Connell, Union Works, Coatbridge in September 1963.

LMS Fowler 2P 4-4-0 No. 40621 was a member of the class introduced in 1928 as a development of the original Midland Railway 1912 built Johnson locos, with cut-down boiler mountings and 6' 9" driving wheels. Many of those in Scotland retained their stylish chimneys, including this one, simmering between duties at Polmadie depot, Glasgow, some time in 1958. Photographer unknown. 40621 was built at Derby Works in November 1929 and was withdrawn from Corkerhill MPD in October 1961. It was scrapped by Connell, Union Works, Coatbridge, in July 1963.

LNER J36 0-6-0 No. 65300 was a member of a very long-lived class, originally introduced in 1888 by Holmes of the North British Railway. Several engines were shipped overseas during the First World War and were named appropriately when they returned. One of these, No. 65243

Several engines were shipped overseas during the First World War and were named appropriately when they returned. One of these, No. 65243 "Maude" survives in preservation. Here, 65300 shares shed yard space at Fort William MPD with LNER K1 class 2-6-0 No. 62011 on the left and what looks like a BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 on the right. The picture is undated, but around 1959. Photographer unknown. 65300 was built at Cowlairs Works in October 1898, was withdrawn from Fort William in July 1962 and scrapped at Arnott & Young Ltd., Old Kilpatrick, in June 1963.

Ex-works LNER Class B1 No. 61244 "Strang Steel" glints in the sunlight amongst other engines lost in the shade, admired by some of the shed staff. Date nor recorded but around 1959. Photographer unknown. 61244 was built by North British in October 1947, Works No. 26145, it was withdrawn from 64A in October 1965 and scrapped at Shipbreaking Industries, Faslane, in January 1966.

Caledonian "72" Class 3P 4-4-0 introduced by Pickersgill in 1920, BR No. 54508, looks as though it hasn't turned a wheel for some considerable time as it languishes in store at Stranraer MPD, perhaps during 1959. Photographer unknown. 54508 was another product of North British Loco Co., Works No. 22954 of December 1922. It was withdrawn from Stranraer in December 1959 and stored there until 1964, then scrapped by P & W McLellan, Langloan, in July 1964.

1962/06/02. LNER D40 Class 4-4-0 No. 62277 was preserved as Great North of Scotland Railway No. 49
1962/06/02. LNER D40 Class 4-4-0 No. 62277 was preserved as Great North of Scotland Railway No. 49 "Gordon Highlander" in 1959 and restored to working order. It was painted in GNoS green livery, though it never carried this in normal service as the livery had been changed to black by the time the loco was built in 1920. Here it is in steam at Aberdeen Ferryhill shed, prior to working a special train from Aberdeen Waterloo to Inverurie and return in conjunction with the RCTS/SLS Joint "Aberdeen Flyer" railtour. Saturday 2nd June 1962.

It had taken over from 46256 "Sir William A Stanier FRS" at Carlisle and then put in an amazing performance over the Waverley line after having to reverse at Carlisle Canal Junction after being mistakenly put on the main line towards Glasgow!

1964/09/26, 5. "Number 9" - Gresley LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 No. 60009 "Union of South Africa" is nowadays a regular performer on the main line. In BR days the engine was latterly allocated to Aberdeen Ferryhill (61B) and is here seen at Glasgow St. John's Goods Yard. It was in charge of the RCTS special "The Scottish Lowlander" railtour and had stopped here for servicing before continuing via Kilmarnock to Carlisle. It had taken over from fellow A4 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" at Niddrie West Junction after a near record run over the Waverley route from Carlisle. Saturday 26th September 1964.

The classic view of Oban station, overlooked by McCaig's Tower, with North British Type 2 Bo-Bo diesel No. D6119 about to depart with a train for Glasgow, with a rather interesting leading vehicle. These engines were built in 1959/60 and became Class 21, though this loco was one of the class re-engined with a more powerful Paxman power unit and re-classified Class 29. The class was not a success and all had been withdrawn by 1972. Wednesday 21st August 1968. Photographer unknown. Note the semaphore signals originally supplied by Stevens & Sons, complete with the Stevens Orb Finials, though the original lower quadrant arms have been replaced with newer upper quadrants.
